OÜ GK CAPITAL designed and delivered 210-litre metal drums (IP-2 type packages) to the Client, the State Enterprise Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant, for use at the Maišiagala Radioactive Waste Storage Facility (MRWSF). As part of the MRWSF decommissioning activities, the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant procured radioactive waste packaging for the safe handling and transport of waste materials. The acquired drums were used to carry out tasks defined within the MRWSF decommissioning project: 210-litre steel drums were employed for the management (transport and interim storage) of low-level waste (LLW) and low-level radioactive waste (LLRW) (classified as MSA-II) generated during decommissioning processes.
The drums—specially manufactured and delivered by OÜ GK CAPITAL for the MRWSF project—were used to transport radioactive waste from the Maišiagala storage site to storage facilities at Ignalina NPP. These IP-2 type packages comply with all applicable international and national requirements for the transport of such waste.
The MRWSF decommissioning project, valued at EUR 15 million and financed by the EU, was monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as well as by other countries preparing for similar dismantling activities. Lithuania is the first country in the world to dismantle such a facility in accordance with the highest international safety standards. Modern infrastructure was established at the site, including temporary buildings, engineering networks and utilities. The temporary multi-layered structure was equipped with ventilation, radiation monitoring, lighting, fire alarm, and other systems. Once all radioactive waste has been removed and confirmation is obtained that no contaminated structures or soil remain, the site will be returned to public use.
